Pioneer Cemeteries
Calaveras County has 40 cemeteries, possibly more. As you walk through these cemeteries you ponder, where did these people come from, what made them give up the comforts of home to travel west, what did they endure and what did they find when they arrived. You will read the tombstones and wonder about each one. They each have their own story to tell. They brought families to raise in this beautiful, wild place, they had dreams of a new life but they also had trials and tribulations. Here lie those who built this West. You are encouraged to visit each and every one of the cemeteries in Calaveras County, for historical study, genealogical research or to travel back in time while you enjoy a walk. Please be respectful of those buried there, do not remove any items and because of the fragile nature of the tombstones please do not disturb them. For information of cemetery locations, contact the Calaveras County Archives, Mon - Thur. - Fri. 8:30 - 4:30 (closed 11:30 - 12:30 Fri. only). 46 N. Main St. San Andreas. (209) 754-3918
