There is also gold panning and caving in the variety of natural limestone and crystalline-filled caverns open to the public.

Calaveras County is famous for its rich gold mining history and Celebrated Jumping Frog, it is also the home of two magnificent groves of giant sequoias. Calaveras Big Trees State Park has over six thousand acres of pine forest on both sides of the Stanislaus River. There are campgrounds, picnic areas, and many miles of hiking and bicycling trails. There is a gentle path through the grove of sequoias so you can enjoy the view of these massive trees.

Nearby is the town of Murphys, a quaint and charming gold rush-era town with several well preserved historic buildings. As you travel through Murphys, you can visit the Mercer Caverns famous for the rare Aragonite formations. Within the county is Moaning Cavern, which holds the largest vertical chamber in a California public cavern.

Along highway 49 is the historic town of Angels Camp. It is a quaint town where much of its historic charm remains. Walk through town and visit the unique shops, galleries, and museums.

Angels Camp is known world wide for its annual Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee held in May at "Frogtown".
